Delegates from EBCI attended the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Annual Conference held in New Orleans, La. on Nov. 12-17.
Cherokee funeral home owner indicted on child sex offenses
Bruce Martin Jr., 51, owner of Long House Funeral Home in Cherokee, N.C., was indicted by a grand jury in Jackson County on Nov. 13, 2023, on six child sex offenses, including one count of statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult, four counts of indecent liberties with a child, and one count of statutory sexual offense with a person who is 15 or younger.
Cherokee man indicted in Jackson County grand jury on first degree murder, murder of an unborn child
Billy Jack Hicks, 51, was indicted by a grand jury in Jackson County on Oct. 2, 2023, in the murder of his wife, Danielle Davina Brady-Hicks—an offense that occurred in October 2020. Hicks had a recent court appearance on Dec. 4 in Jackson County. The hearing was continued to Jan. 2, 2024.

“Disruption” shakes up Museum of the Cherokee Indian exhibit
The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is switching gears on its permanent exhibit and taking funerary and ceremonial objects off display. Taking these items off display created holes in the exhibit which have been filled with contemporary Cherokee art pieces.

One Feather wins 13 N.C. Press Awards
The Cherokee One Feather received a total of 13 awards from the N.C. Press Association at its 149th Annual Convention held in Raleigh on Thursday, Aug. 25. As a staff, the paper took second place in Division A for Community Coverage and third place for Use of Social Media.

LETTER: Neadeau bows out of Big Cove race
First and foremost, I would like to thank every tribal member that has taken time to speak to me, support me, and trust me as the Chief of Police, Tribal Council candidate, and as a proud EBCI tribal member.
COMMENTARY: Life was better when I could have it my way.
I am a little more than frustrated at how many corporations and business owners absolutely ignore many of the fundamentals of customer service in their businesses.
