The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, March 18 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:44 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, March 4, 2024, in a joint, special called meeting with the School Board of Swain County Schools (SCS) in the Swain East Media Center. Fire Mountain Inferno returns for third year
May 22 marked the beginning of the Third Annual Fire Mountain Inferno, drawing in mountain bikers from all of the region to participate in the two-day event held in Cherokee.
Whittier man sentenced to prison for firearm offense
Chief U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger sentenced Michael James George, 46, of Whittier, on Thursday, May 27 to 30 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release for a firearm offense, announced William T. Stetzer, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

OBITUARY: Charles Edwin McCoy
Charles Edwin McCoy, age 92, has “gone to the big job.” He peacefully transitioned to the next chapter on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Oct. 15, 1931, in Cherokee, N.C., Charles was the son of Jesse and Ethel Owle McCoy.

Anna Sue (Cooper) Owle, a vibrant soul cherished by many, departed this world on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023 at the age of 90 after a brief illness and stay at the Tsali Care Center. Sue was the seventh of nine children to the late Arnold and Myrtle Cooper.

MUSIC REVIEW: Birdtown Crossing hits mark on “Singing in the Sky”
Birdtown Crossing’s new release, entitled “Singing in the Sky”, hits the mark as a solid recording that will leave any listener only wanting more. The group, which is based in Cherokee, NC and has been traveling the pow wow circuit since 1998, sings songs in the Northern Plains style (well, mostly).
