CCS School Board holds April meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Tuesday, April 22 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:45 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
A new amenity in downtown: Kanunohi Park officially opens in Cherokee
A little rain didn’t dampen any spirits as children played in the various water features as the Kanunohi (Bullfrog Place) Park opened officially in downtown Cherokee, N.C. on the afternoon of Friday, May 2. It is the latest project of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and adds a new amenity to the downtown area.

Theme selected for 112th Cherokee Indian Fair scheduled for Oct. 1-5
The 112th Cherokee Indian Fair, a cherished tradition celebrating the rich heritage and culture of the Cherokee people, will be held from Oct. 1-5, at the Qualla Expo Center (old High School Site) in Cherokee, N.C.
THE GOOD STUFF: Tribal member appointed to Air Force Academy
Reis Howell, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is aiming high for his future. The Tumwater High School (Wash.) senior has received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Cherokee Preservation Foundation cosponsors 16th annual Day of Caring
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, and the Offices of the Principal Chief and Vice Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) came together to sponsor the 16th annual Day of Caring on Thursday, May 16.

COMMENTARY: Thoughts on Tsali Care Work Session
After reading Robert Jumper’s commentary: Irons in the fire, I feel the need to comment on the Tribal Council work session regarding Tsali Care Center. I attended the meeting on Aug. 8, and I appreciate Chief Hicks and Tribal Council for making sure this meeting happened.

Running a government providing services for 16,000 constituents must be a daunting task, to say the least. And to that the stress of administering a conjectured an approximate $300 million budget and you might see why leaders of such organizations are overly cautious and why phrases like “out of an abundance of caution” pop up on the regular.
SPEAKING OF FAITH: Eternal destination
Preachers do not preach much about Hell these days. To most folks, it is unpopular. Most folks do not care to sit in a pew on Sunday morning and listen about a place they are fairly sure they are not going to.

VOLLEYBALL: Foerst signs to play at Ferrum College
Aria Foerst, a senior at Cherokee High School, will continue her volleyball career next year at Ferrum College. She signed a letter of intent during an event at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the morning of Monday, March 14.

OBITUARY: Richard Earl Arneach Jr. (Richie)
Richard Earl Arneach Jr. (Richie) was at his residence when the Lord unexpectedly called him Home on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024. Richie was born in Cherokee, N.C. Oct. 11, 1951 to the late Richard Earl Arneach, Sr (Buster) and Bonnie Louise Arneach. Richie celebrated his 73rd birthday in Heaven.

William Joseph Hornbuckle (Billy Joe), 55, of Cherokee, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late George and Mary George Hornbuckle.
