Tribal Court Docket for Aug. 20
This is a criminal docket date for the Cherokee Tribal Court. All of the defendants listed have only been charged with the crimes/offenses listed and should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Last of three defendants sentenced for robbing Cherokee elder
Kasey Lynn Keffer, 40, of Sylva, was sentenced on Thursday, Aug. 16 to 100 months in prison and three years of supervised release on robbery charges, announced Andrew Murray, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Keffer’s co-defendants, Mitchum Scott Turpin and Tillmon Gene Fortner, were previously sentenced to 120 and 78 months in prison, respectively, for their involvement in the robbery.
Tribe’s Syringe Services Program working on ‘harm reduction’
Several years ago, tribal officials declared an epidemic level of Hepatitis C (Hep C) in the Cherokee community. Now, staff at a small, yellow building overlooking the EBCI Public Health and Human Services administration building is working diligently to help curb that dilemma.
