Tribe to consider changes to free press
The use of anonymous sources in the Cherokee One Feather currently has no protection on the Qualla Boundary. However, if an ordinance introduced to Tribal Council Aug. 2 passes and is ratified, that could change.
Tribal Court Docket for Aug. 20
This is a criminal docket date for the Cherokee Tribal Court. All of the defendants listed have only been charged with the crimes/offenses listed and should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Last of three defendants sentenced for robbing Cherokee elder
Kasey Lynn Keffer, 40, of Sylva, was sentenced on Thursday, Aug. 16 to 100 months in prison and three years of supervised release on robbery charges, announced Andrew Murray, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Keffer’s co-defendants, Mitchum Scott Turpin and Tillmon Gene Fortner, were previously sentenced to 120 and 78 months in prison, respectively, for their involvement in the robbery.
