From July 9-14, 2023-24 Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Royalty, including Miss Cherokee Scarlett “Gigage” Guy, Teen Miss Cherokee Kyndra Postoak, Junior Miss Cherokee Kennedy Moore, and Little Miss Cherokee Rhiannon Postoak, along with their chaperones and EBCI Pageant Board members Lisa Penick and Natalie Grant, travelled to Choctaw, Miss., to attend the 74th Annual Choctaw Indian Fair.

After reading Robert Jumper’s commentary: Irons in the fire, I feel the need to comment on the Tribal Council work session regarding Tsali Care Center. I attended the meeting on Aug. 8, and I appreciate Chief Hicks and Tribal Council for making sure this meeting happened.

Running a government providing services for 16,000 constituents must be a daunting task, to say the least. And to that the stress of administering a conjectured an approximate $300 million budget and you might see why leaders of such organizations are overly cautious and why phrases like “out of an abundance of caution” pop up on the regular.

CROSS COUNTRY: Crowe, Swimmer win at Bulldog XC Meet

The Cherokee High School (CHS) and Middle School (CMS) cross country teams traveled to Murphy for the Bulldog XC Meet on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 24. Ogana Swimmer, CMS Braves, won the middle school boy’s race with a time of 11:52.22, and Livia Crowe, CMS Lady Braves, won the middle school girl’s race with a time of 13:28.49.

Winners announced from WCU’s Judaculla Art Competition

A 15- by 17-inch linoleum print created by an artist who grew up near Jackson County’s famed Cherokee petroglyph Judaculla Rock was declared the first-place winner in the recent Judaculla Art Competition sponsored by Western Carolina University’s Cherokee Center.
