Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (June 12, 2025)
The One Feather will now provide weekly legislative updates on various pieces of federal legislation of interest to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The bills are shown in the order in which they were introduced following the new bills for the week.
Graham County man sentenced to 19 years in prison on drug, DV charges
District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch announced that a Graham County jury found Keith Mark Tipton guilty of four criminal charges, resulting in a minimum active sentence of 231 months, or 19.25 years in prison.

The Center for Native Health (CNH) has announced Kristina Hyatt as the program officer for Maternal & Child Health programming.
NAFOA announces Blankenship as new executive director
Following a rigorous search, NAFOA, founded as the Native American Finance Officers Association, has named Cory M. Blankenship, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, as its new executive director. He will officially assume the role on Sept. 30.

COMMENTARY: The ancient origins of banishment
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) utilizes banishment to maintain law and order on the Qualla Boundary. Individuals convicted of crimes ranging from drug trafficking to assault can and have been banished from the Qualla Boundary.

CROSS COUNTRY: EBCI Runners bring home the hardware from state
Multiple members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians brought home plaques and medals from the 1A State Cross Country Championship held at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C. on Saturday, Nov. 5.
FOOTBALL: Braves beat Starmount in first round of playoffs
The Cherokee Braves (3-8), the 24th seed in the 1A state playoffs, traveled to the 8th seed, Starmount Rams (7-4), on the evening of Friday, Nov. 4 and came away with a 28-21 victory.

Art installation set up on Island
Sometimes art is created and lasts millennia, and sometimes art is created and lasts momentarily. The latter was the case on Saturday, July 1 as two artists, Jeff Marley and Frank Brannon, set up an installation among the bamboo on the Oconaluftee Island Park.
Native American art exhibit receives NEA grant
The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded a $25,000 grant in support of a contemporary Native American art exhibit scheduled for display at the Western Carolina University Fine Art Museum from Aug. 1 through Dec. 8.
Doobie Brothers heading back to Harrah’s Cherokee in September
