I want to share an update on the work we’ve been focused on throughout March.
EBCI among tribal communities to receive Indian Housing Block Grant funding
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) is among the tribal communities to receive funding in a recent announcement of $1.1 billion in Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
CCS School Board holds April meetings
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, Apr. 7, and Monday, Apr. 20, in the Central Office Board Room. The Apr. 20 meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson at 5:33 p.m.

EBCI Higher Education continues Summer Youth College Experience Program
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Higher Education office recently completed their most recent Summer Youth College Experience Program (SYCEP), a five-week long high school program for EBCI rising freshmen to rising seniors.

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in Swain County High School Invitational
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team participated in the Swain County High School Invitational meet held at Enka High School in Candler, N.C. on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 25.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK: Cherokee athletes win titles at SMC Championship
Several athletes on the Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track and field team won titles at the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship (SMC) held at Andrews High School in Andrews, N.C. on the afternoon of Monday, April 24.
Atlanta Braves to host Second Annual Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase
The Atlanta Braves will host the second annual Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase at Truist Park, June 24-25. The top 50 high school baseball players of Native American descent from around the country will participate in a pro-style workout on Saturday, June 24 and a showcase game on Sunday, June 25.

OBITUARY: Nicholas Donald Briggs III
Nicholas Donald Briggs III, 81 of Whittier, N.C., passed away to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.
OBITUARY: Thomas Keith Parker
Thomas Keith Parker, “Tom” as he was better known, age 81, of the Wolftown Community in Cherokee, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, after an extended illness.
OBITUARY: Roger “Poncho” Ballard Jr.
Roger “Poncho” Ballard Jr., 67, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, after a long illness. Surrounded by love, he was joyfully reunited with his precious grandson, Kobe Gavin, whom he loved and missed with all his heart.

Michigan metal band coming back to Cherokee for show
Michigan-based heavy metal band Heartsick will return to Cherokee to headline a five-band show next month.
Cherokee Performing Arts taking risks with “Into the Woods”
With several musicals under their belts, the students in the Cherokee Performing Arts program at Cherokee Central Schools are taking some risks with their latest production, “Into the Woods”.
Foerst admitted to prestigious WCU musical theater program
Brennen Foerst, a 2018 graduate of Cherokee High School, has been admitted to the prestigious Western Carolina University (WCU) musical theater program for the fall semester.
