Chief Report for June 2025
June was a month of continued progress, service, and reflection. From honoring our history and strengthening our government relationships to celebrating the hard work of our youth and public servants, we stayed focused on building up our Tribe together.
CCS School Board holds July meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, July 21 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 3:58 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

I take a lot of photographs, but one of my favorites from the past few years shows an elder of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) at the Annual Cherokee Speakers Walk.

I was born and raised in Montana in the fifties and sixties. The 4th of July was the biggest holiday of the year for me. Bigger than Christmas or my birthday or anything. Our family plans always included doing something special.

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in WNC Kickoff Invitational
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team participated in the WNC Kickoff Invitational at the Western Carolina University track in Cullowhee on the afternoon of Friday, March 24.
CHEERLEADING: Frady signs to cheer at Mars Hill University
Adia Frady, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a senior at Cherokee High School (CHS), will continue her cheerleading career at the next level. She signed a letter of intent during a ceremony at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the morning of Thursday, March 23 to join the Cheerleading and Dance Teams at Mars Hill University.
FOOTBALL: Hill signs to play at Maryville College
Kenton Tsisqua Hill, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a senior at Cherokee High School (CHS), will continue his football career at the next level.

Mary Catherine “Tootie” Smith, age 94, of Wolftown Community, widow of Sibbald Smith, passed away, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025 at Hospice at the Cherokee Hospital.

Bryan Steven Squirrel, 41, of Cherokee, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of George Squirrel of Cherokee and the late Sarah Elizabeth Bradley.
