Man from Cherokee among four indicted under Operation Take Back America
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson announced on Wednesday, Aug. 6 that a number of individuals are facing federal firearms and immigration charges under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to protect our communities from perpetrators of violent crime, repel the invasion of illegal immigration and achieve total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs).
Cherokee woman charged for inflicting serious bodily injury on a child in Indian Country
Shawnenna Caroline Roland, 39, of Cherokee, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is facing federal charges for child abuse, child neglect, and assault in Indian country, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

“Homelands”: EBCI artists featured in McClung’s mound exhibit
Four artists of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are among Indigenous artists featured in a new exhibit at the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation has announced Mistee Cutshaw as the recipient of this year’s Lula Owl Gloyne Award, recognizing her remarkable dedication and contributions to healthcare within the Cherokee community.
Services are expanding at Tsali Care Center
Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) has announced the expansion of its Rehabilitation Department to include services at Tsali Care Center. Effective the week of January 20, 2025, CIHA’s Physical Therapy, Wound Care, and Orthopedic Clinic will assume the rehabilitation services for residents of Tsali Care Center, ensuring access to high-quality, in-house care.

COMMENTARY: Sovereignty between a rock and a hard place
Over my years with the tribe, I have been a witness to a lot of chest-thumping over Indian sovereignty. From top tribal leadership to the lowest common denominator, we take pride in our perceived freedom.
THE GOOD STUFF: Hugh Lambert serves with a smile and soulful spirit
The ever-present smile and positive attitude of Hugh Lambert is endearing to all who meet him. He is quick with a joke and a funny story but also very focused on serving his people and community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).
COMMENTARY: Community awareness needs governmental action
Some of the biggest problems we should give awareness and action to on the Qualla Boundary, especially as it pertains to MMIP, are domestic violence and sexual assault and human trafficking – particularly child sex trafficking.

RUNNING: Lossiah signs with Haskell Indian Nations Univ.
Another member of the highly-decorated men’s cross country team at Cherokee High School (CHS) is going to run at the next level. Anthony Lossiah, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, signed a letter of intent to run collegiately for Haskell Indian Nations University during a ceremony at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the morning of Monday, May 8. He will run cross country and track.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee hosts SMC Championships
Cherokee High School (CHS) hosted the 2023 Smoky Mountain Conference track and field championships on the windy afternoon of Wednesday, May 3.
NCHSAA votes to allow NIL deals for high school athletes
Effective July 1, 2023, student athletes may engage in certain commercial activities to receive tangible benefits.

Reuben Edward Taylor, 99, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord and loving wife, Mary Jane, Wednesday, March 12, 2025. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Timpson and Cinda Reed Taylor.
OBITUARY: Carolyn Ann Wolfe
Carolyn Ann Wolfe, 66, of Cherokee, “Headed Out” on her final journey, at Mission Hospital, March 8, 2025. Carolyn was born June 27, 1958, in Commerce, Ga. to the late Waymon Cain and Johnnie Sue Patrick Hill. Carolyn was a homemaker and spent her life providing a home and life for her family. She married the love her life Charles Wolfe in 1982.
