Climbingbear found not guilty on all charges
Travis Climbingbear, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), was found not guilty on all seven charges by a jury of his peers in Cherokee Tribal Court on the afternoon of July 22 with Chief Judge Monty Beck presiding.
Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (July 22)

High School sports starts the week of Aug. 14, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the sidelines. Something I’m not looking forward to is having to hear all of the cussing, screaming, and threats coming from the “fans” directed at the sports officials.
New Kituwah, Cherokee Central sign MOU on middle school sports
The Superintendent of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) and the Superintendent of New Kituwah Academy (NKA) entered a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, Aug. 3 which will allow students of New Kituwah Academy to participate in middle school sports.
FISHING: Over 300 anglers come out for Tim Hill Memorial Tournament
A total of 332 anglers registered for the Tim Hill Memorial Fish Tournament on July 8-9 in Cherokee, N.C. and turned in 111 winning tags totaling $4,350 in prizes. Jeffrey D. Meyer, of Statesville, N.C., and Michael Hepp, of Asheville, N.C., both turned in white tags winning $500 each.

WCU department hosting meteor shower viewing at Waterrock Knob
Western Carolina University’s Department of Chemistry and Physics will be hosting a viewing of the Perseid meteor shower from 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, through sunrise on Monday, Aug. 13, at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Cherokee students to revisit “Lion King Jr.” in upcoming performances
Several years ago, Cherokee students took to the stage and presented “Lion King Jr.” which was the first musical production in the history of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS). Now, many of those same students – a lot of them now seniors at Cherokee High School, are revisiting the play for a set of upcoming performances.
Cherokee artist to show at Rotunda Gallery in Sylva
A showing of new works and a series of prints by Jenean Hornbuckle, a landscape painter, will open at the Rotunda Gallery in the Sylva Library on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a reception sponsored by the Jackson County Arts Council and Sequoyah Fund.
“Sleepy Hollow” hits the mark for year one
“The Sleepy Hollow Experience” capped off a successful debut year in Cherokee on Sunday, Nov. 3 after running 24 shows.
