CCS Board analyzes teacher salaries
The Cherokee Central Schools Board of Education focused on teachers’ salaries to begin its meeting this Monday, July 18.
TERO holds Tribal Contract Training
The Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO) held a training on Wednesday, July 20 to help program personnel better understand the Independent Contract Agreement (ICA), which is the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) standardized contractual agreement for establishing formal working relationships for products and services. Hosted by Terri Henry, executive director of TERO, the training was conducted by Michael McConnell, EBCI’s attorney general.
Council approves $3 million to start Fairgrounds renovation project
The Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds is in need of renovation to the point that the annual Cherokee Indian Fair, the largest annual event of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), is not able to be held there safely. Tribal Council approved $3 million, during its regular session on Thursday, July 14, to get that renovation project started.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Higher Education & Training office recently partnered with Mars Hill University to offer EBCI Summer Youth College Experience (SYCE) participants a weeklong college immersion experience.
Cooper appointed to WCU Board of Trustees
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has appointed Casey Cooper, chief executive officer of Cherokee Indian Hospital, to fill an unexpired term on the Board of Trustees at Western Carolina University.
Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program expands to SCC
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP) and Southwestern Community College (SCC) in Sylva are partnering to increase the number of students transferring to and graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill. SCC will be the 11th community college to partner with C-STEP and Carolina.

Olympic pole vault athlete visits Cherokee Youth Center
Merritt Grace Van Meter, a Creek and Cherokee professional pole vault athlete currently training for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, visited with the 4th and 5th grade members of the Cherokee Youth Center over the course of several weeks to provide mentorship and promote healthy decision making skills.

Children will get to learn the basics of basketball at a camp this summer named in memory of a former Lady Brave.
