CCS School Board adds Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day to CCS Calendar
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, Aug. 15 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
Grant-funded welcome signs for Cultural District discussed at Planning Board
Last year, area partners received a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to provide two artistic welcome signs to be installed designating the Cherokee Cultural District on the Qualla Boundary (Cherokee, N.C.).
Man pleads guilty to first-degree murder of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant
Ernest D. Pheasant, Sr., 47, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), pleaded guilty on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024 to first-degree murder in Indian Country, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Pheasant entered his guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge W. Carleton Metcalf.

Tribal member a finalist for Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award
The Western North Carolina Historical Association announced the selection of five finalists for the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award recently and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is included. Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle was nominated for her book, “Even As We Breathe: A Novel”.

The year was 1972. A group of 45 public television stations, primarily from the western United States, were brought together with the help of a Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) grant for a three-day meeting at historic Wingspread, the Lloyd Wright House at the Johnson Foundation in Racine, Wisconsin. Frank Blythe (Eastern Cherokee/Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota) was one of the participants. He was one of just six Native attendees who were working in public television at the time.

SPEAKING OF FAITH: Stuck in the middle…
Do we realize how scared those twelve men had to have been to have screamed out as they began to think they were seeing a ghost near them walking on the water? Those who were fishermen knew they’d never seen a man walking on the water like they saw one out in the middle of the water, in the rough sea, or at least thought they were seeing one. All of them had cried out in fear.
COMMENTARY: Is exclusion serious?
The ability to banish or exclude people from our lands “is an inherent and essential part of Tribal sovereignty. It is indispensable to the Tribe’s autonomy and self-governance.” Sounds serious to our government.

BASKETBALL: Teesateskie, Tisho named first team All-District
Tori Teesateskie, a junior at Cherokee High School, and Shay Tisho, a senior at Smoky Mountain, both EBCI tribal members, have been named to the All-District 12 first team (western North Carolina) by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.

Gary Jay Shell, 33, of the Painttown Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 6, 2023. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Meroney George Shell of Cherokee and Agnes Ann Tooni and her husband Rick Larch of Cherokee.

A $6 million donation by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians will allow San Bernardino-based KVCR Television to launch the nation’s first 24-hour Native American television channel, tribal leaders and the station announced on Wednesday, June 16.
