CCS School Board holds meeting on June 3
The Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) School Board met on the evening of June 3 in Ruth’s Chris Steak House at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. The meeting was called to order at 4:44 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

Tribal Council adopts Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day
On the morning of June 6, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 212 (2024), recognizing every Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving as Tsalagi Aniwonisgi Didanvdadisdi (Cherokee Speakers Memorial Day) to honor the lives of fluent Cherokee speakers who have passed.

Frell Owl Award presented to Peaches Squirrell
The coveted Frell Owl Award has been presented to a Cherokee basketball legend who has continued to give of her time and knowledge to help countless numbers of young players. The 2021 Frell Owl Award was presented to Peaches Squirrell during a luncheon at Harrah’s Cherokee Convention Center on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 4.
Tribal member named to Public Art Advisory Council
Angelina Jumper, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the cultural resource supervisor for the Junaluska Museum, has been named to the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) Public Arts Advisory Council.
Wilma Mankiller Quarter to be released during June 6 ceremony
On June 6, a limited number of the 2022 Wilma Mankiller Quarters will be released to the public in Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation.

Thousands of scholar-athletes signed college letters of intent on National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Three Cherokee Braves signed to play football at the next level including Damian Blanton (Brevard College), Isaiah Evans (Gardner-Webb University), and Joaquin Layno (Western Carolina University) during a ceremony at the Charles George Memorial Arena.
