Over 300 people attended the “From Darkness Into Hope” Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Event held on the Oconaluftee Island Park in Cherokee, N.C. on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 4.
BGN to review Kuwohi name restoration application in September meeting
An application to restore the name of Clingman’s Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to its original Cherokee name, Kuwohi (mulberry place), will be heard by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) soon.
Visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park spent $2.2 billion in local communities last year
A new National Park Service report shows that 13,297,647 visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2023 spent $2.2 billion in communities near the park. That spending supported 33,748 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $3.4 billion.

COMMENTARY: Referendum law needs to be more community friendly
The 2023 Tribal election was an education in referendum politics. The reactions and decisions made provided a window into the collective mindset of the government and legal establishment that is serving our people.
EDITORIAL: Make it law that the tribal flag flies equally with the U.S. flag.
The tribal flag of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) flies outside of the Ginger Lynn Welch Complex – the building where the office of the Cherokee One Feather is located. But, that flag flies below the United States flag in a position of subservience.
