Wilnoty receives two counts of felony death by vehicle, murder charges dismissed
The trial in Jackson Co. Courthouse for second-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica and Ah-Yo-Ka Calhoun began on Dec. 3. The trial ended in just a few days with a plea agreement from defendant Jacob Wilnoty resulting in the dismissal of two second-degree murder charges.
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) changes Minors Fund Distribution plan
During their regular session on Thursday, Dec. 5, Dinilawigi passed Ord. No. 334 (2024) unanimously that changes the distribution plan from three staggered distributions to five.

COMMENTARY: Let’s Talk
In second grade, in Mrs. Herbert’s class at Cherokee Elementary School, there was a day where I decided to write in detail everything that happened in class that day and report it to the class. I was a shy kid, but my classmates and teachers were very supportive and receptive of my report. I realized then that I liked reporting. I liked telling stories and sharing them with others, and others appreciated it as well.

Colby Taylor, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a student at Swain County High School, has been selected as the recipient of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) 2020 Pat Gainey Student Award.

Tori Teesateskie, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been named a NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) DII Third Team All-American.
BASKETBALL: Braves, Lady Braves named to All-Conference teams
Several members of the Cherokee Braves and Lady Braves varsity basketball teams have been named to the Big Smoky Mountain All-Conference teams.
