Kuwohi name restored as BGN approves application
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) approved an application on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024 that restores the name of Clingman’s Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), to its original Cherokee name, Kuwohi (mulberry place).
CCS School Board holds Sept. 16 meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, Sept. 16, in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:47 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.

As the sun glistened off of the clouds hanging in the valley at Kuwohi, mulberry place, on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 10, students were learning about the history of the site that is special to the Cherokee people.

Tribal member appointed to head University of Miami Supreme Court
Dallas J. Bennett, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), has been appointed to the top position in the University of Miami (UM) Student Government Supreme Court. A junior majoring in history with a minor in political science, he has been appointed as the university’s Student Government Supreme Court Chief Justice – a position never before held by an EBCI tribal member.
Celebrating 35 years of service of Deb West
On Thursday, March 30, it was business as usual at the Cherokee Senior Citizens program. Clients began arriving as early as 10 a.m. for activities and lunch. On that day, like every day, announcements began around 11:15 a.m. But Thursday was a little different. Unbeknownst to the staff who were asked to gather in the dining room, a special announcement was being made.

A very good and productive discussion was held at the November Planning Board meeting. There hadn’t been a meeting since August and the relatively new representatives along with the Principal Chief were identifying the purpose and function of the Planning Board in addition to discussing outstanding land use issues currently in question.

Larry Phillip “Phil” Allen Maney, 82, of Fall Branch, Tenn., passed into the loving arms of his Savior on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023. A native of Cherokee, Phil was born May 24, 1941, to the late Jesse J. Maney and Muriel Smith Maney.
