It is easy to take the place you live for granted. I have lived in the mountains of western North Carolina most of my life. As a good friend and former coworker used to say, I have fished these streams and walked these trails all my life.

The cause of a free and open press took a hit last week, albeit a symbolic one, in the Tribal Council Chambers on Thursday, April 5.

I want to start this edition with my best wishes to the family of Dr. Wolfe who has walked on.

One Feather staff sat down recently with Mary “Missy” Crowe, an EBCI tribal member from the Yellowhill Community, who wished to express her thoughts and experiences with the tribal election process.  This is a transcription of that discussion. I have heard Tribal Council and community members discuss the possibility of one person, one vote in tribal government for many years.

Several months ago, I had surgery on my knee and during that time I was debilitated, it was necessary for me to use a walker. 

Isn’t it ironic how tribal leaders, and members alike, still seem to struggle with ideas of ways that would best benefit our Tribe when it comes to diversification of our business interest?

I am a student of government. I hate politics, but I gravitate to discussion of public issues, and one leads to the other.
