TRACK & FIELD: Swain sweeps team state titles; Several CHS athletes place

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Swain Co. High School won both the men’s and women’s team titles at the 1A State Track & Field Championship held at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. on Monday, May 20.  The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 18, was moved due to weather.

Several Cherokee High School (CHS) athletes placed at the event including Dvdaya Swimmer who took second place in the women’s 800M with a time of 2:20.25 and Joscelyn Stamper who placed third in the women’s discus with a throw of 113-0.

Other CHS athletes competing included:

  • Letsi Burgos, seventh place, women’s 200M Dash, 26.15
  • Levi Winter, ninth place, men’s 110M Hurdles, 15.82
  • Aizen Bell, eighth place, men’s high jump, 5-8
  • Luke Smith, tenth place, men’s discus, 129-3

It was the first team state title for the Swain men’s team and the fourth in row, sixth overall, for the Swain women.  The Maroon Devils edged Mountain Island Charter 81-75 to win on the men’s side, and the Lady Maroon Devils dominated with 94 points.  Lejeune and Avery Co. tied for second in the women’s team title race with 41 points.

There were several athletes from the Smoky Mountain Conference who won state titles including:

  • Nse Uffort, Swain Co., men’s shot put, 61-09.50
  • Zoie Shuler, Robbinsville, women’s triple jump, 37-01.75; women’s high jump, 5-04
  • Logan Shuler, Andrews, men’s high jump, 6-06
  • Swain Co., women’s 4x800M Relay team consisting of Arizona Blankenship, Angelia Lomelli, Annie Lewis, and Emily Grey Stargell; 9:37.43
  • Arizona Blankenship, Swain Co., women’s 1600M Run, 5:06.64; women’s 3200M Run, 11:00.45
  • Annie Lewis, Swain Co., women’s 800M Run, 2:14.97
  • Swain Co., men’s 4x400M Relay team consisting of Josh Collins, Josiah Glaspie, Connor Brown, and Abhi Patel; 3:28.16
