CCS School Board holds April meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Tuesday, April 22 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:45 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
A new amenity in downtown: Kanunohi Park officially opens in Cherokee
A little rain didn’t dampen any spirits as children played in the various water features as the Kanunohi (Bullfrog Place) Park opened officially in downtown Cherokee, N.C. on the afternoon of Friday, May 2. It is the latest project of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and adds a new amenity to the downtown area.
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) passes cannabis home grow law
People with a Medical Cannabis Patient Card can now grow their own cannabis again on tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, under certain restrictions.

Oconaluftee Indian Village prepares to open for 2024 season
The Oconaluftee Indian Village will open on Tuesday, April 16, for their 2024 season, which will last until Nov. 2.
EBCI members present on mask making at Western Carolina University
On the evening of Thursday, April 11, two Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) members, Davy Arch and Driver Blythe, gave a presentation on the history of Cherokee mask making at the Mountain Heritage Center at Tali Tsisgwayahi (Two Sparrows Place) on the campus of Western Carolina University (WCU).

EDITORIAL: Will the Constitution survive the political cycle?
The community should craft the governing document for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Certainly, the community will want legal guidance for the process. That is just a reality of our times. We have become a society of vague language, with multiple meanings and motives attached to the words we write.

COMMENTARY: Tsalagi Minute signs would provide education around town
Several years ago, the One Feather started a weekly informational graphic we call the Tsalagi Minute. I think it would be neat to see Tsalagi Minute signs made, featuring some of these graphics, that could be placed around the Qualla Boundary – most specifically in and around downtown Cherokee and the cultural district.

FOOTBALL: Braves blank North Georgia Falcons to improve to 2-1
The Cherokee Braves (2-1) dominated a home game at Ray Kinsland Stadium against the North Georgia Falcons (1-2) on the evening of Friday, Sept. 3. Cherokee had 313 yards of total offense and held the Falcons to only 26 which included -26 rushing due to quarterback sacks.
CROSS COUNTRY: Cherokee runners successful at Murphy meet
The Cherokee Middle School and High School cross country teams left Cherokee before daybreak to travel to Murphy for a meet on the early morning of Saturday, Aug. 28.
FOOTBALL: Braves provide rough seas for Avery Vikings
With a massive 560 yards of total offense, the Cherokee Braves (1-1) provided a rough sailing environment and stormy waters for the visiting Avery Co. Vikings (0-2) on the evening of Friday, Aug. 27.

OBITUARY: Matthew Lee Smith “Bubba”
Matthew Lee Smith “Bubba”, 41, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, passed away peacefully to go home and be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 13, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Walter “Paul” Smith and Kathy “Punkin” Smith.

Georgenna Lee Arch, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital.
OBITUARY: Mildred Alyne Walker Dixon
Mildred Alyne Walker Dixon, 87, of Whittier, N.C., went home to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 9, 2024. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late William McKinley Walker and Amanda Catt Walker.
