Connecting to the ancestors: Remember the Removal riders finish their journey
The 2025 Remember the Removal riders finished their journey as they arrived in Tahlequah, Okla. for a homecoming celebration on Friday, June 20 where they each received a medal. Following a send-off event at Kituwah on Friday, May 30, the riders began their trip on Monday, June 2 in New Echota, Ga., the former capital of the Cherokee Nation.
Interior, USDA Forest Service expand mental health support for federal wildland firefighters and dispatchers
The Department of the Interior and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service announced on Friday, June 20 that federal wildland firefighters and dispatchers now have access to expanded mental health support through a network of licensed providers.

Balance on the trail: Blythe shares journey of peace through mountain biking
On a temperate summer day with a light breeze blowing, Laura Blythe embarks on a ride on the Fire Mountain Trail solidifying one thing she’s been seeking – balance. Blythe, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has been mountain biking for five years and said the sport has provided her with balance, therapy, and peace.

Over 1,500 participate in Opening Day Fish Tournament in Cherokee
A total of 1,573 anglers registered for the Opening Day Fish Tournament held in Cherokee on March 26-27 according to EBCI Fisheries & Wildlife Management. A total of 271 tagged fish were released with 112 of those being turned in. In all, 96 anglers turned in tags for a total cash payout of $4,025.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in Robbinsville meet
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team traveled to Robbinsville High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 23 to participate in a four-school meet along with Swain Co. and Hayesville. Following are results, per nc.milesplit, of all of CHS’s participants:

OBITUARY: Carly Dea Maples
Carly Dea Maples, 47, of the Birdtown Community, passed away peacefully with family by her side Monday, Nov. 18, 2024. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of Linda Maples of Cherokee, and George O. Burgess of Franklin, N.C.
OBITUARY: Karen Lynn George
Karen Lynn George, daughter of late Jennie Lossie-George and Alfred George, was born on Aug. 30h, 1965 in Cherokee, N.C. She went to be home with the lord on Nov. 16, 2024.
OBITUARY: Frances Fannie Cucumber
Frances Fannie Cucumber, 90, passed away at Tsali Care Center on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, and the daughter of the late James Cucumber and Elizabeth (Reed) Cucumber.
