EBCI Code Talkers highlighted at Memorial Day observance
The heroic contributions of code talkers from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians during World War I were highlighted during the Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 26 in Cherokee, N.C. The event was hosted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143.

COMMENTARY: A year of caring
Several times a year, we are enlisted, or solicited, to do volunteer work for our community. Community work is noble work indeed and should be done. But the way many of us do it and what we call volunteering is not noble at all.

The title is far from being original. Flip Wilson, a well-known comedian, made the phrase a tag title for jokes and commentaries and probably about a zillion sermons and devotions back in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
COMMENTARY: Don’t shorten the primary process
I think allowing the primary period to be shortened further distances the community from the process of electing tribal officials and discourages qualified but lesser-known candidates from attempting to seek office. Similarly, the Election Board is asking for the filing period to be reduced to five days.

OBITUARY: Wanda Murphy Cucumber
Wanda Murphy Cucumber, age 68, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024.
OBITUARY: Dorothy (Rowena) Rowland
Dorothy (Rowena) Rowland, 93, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late John and Sally Lambert.
OBITUARY: Tally Bradley
Tally Bradley, 22, of Cherokee in the Wolftown Community, went on his Heavenly Ride Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Sarah and David Creson of Cherokee and Jud Bradley of Cherokee. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ed Laws; great grandmother, Elsie (Mawie) Rowland; cousin, John Davis; and grandfather, Joe Bradley.
