Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) passes resolution for MMIP database
On the afternoon of April 3 during regular session, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council), voted unanimously to pass Res. No. 4775: A resolution to authorize and request the development of a single EBCI database of information and cases concerning Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP), submitted by Ugvwiyuhi (Principal Chief) Michell Hicks.
Pheasant sentenced to life in prison for 2013 murder
Ernest D. Pheasant Sr., 47, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, April 3, 2025 for the 2013 murder of Marie Walkingstick Pheasant, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Cherokee Preservation Foundation cosponsors 16th annual Day of Caring
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, and the Offices of the Principal Chief and Vice Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) came together to sponsor the 16th annual Day of Caring on Thursday, May 16.

Cherokee High School (CHS) held their Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2024 on the evening of Friday, May 24 in Ray Kinsland Stadium. CHS had a graduating class of 92 students.

COMMENTARY: Tsalagi Minute signs would provide education around town
Several years ago, the One Feather started a weekly informational graphic we call the Tsalagi Minute. I think it would be neat to see Tsalagi Minute signs made, featuring some of these graphics, that could be placed around the Qualla Boundary – most specifically in and around downtown Cherokee and the cultural district.
COMMENTARY: We need to be more like Dave.
Dave Russell is my counterpart at The Sylva Herald and Ruralite. We have a dandy working relationship with the Herald and it sounds like he and I share some commonalities when it comes to managing and reporting.

BASKETBALL: Daniels signs with Northern Oklahoma College
Jayce Daniels, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a senior at Piedmont High School in Piedmont, Okla., has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Northern Oklahoma College.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee boys team wins five-school meet
With a score of 171 points, the Cherokee High School (CHS) boys track and field team took first place in a five-school meet held at Cherokee on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 30. The Cherokee girls team took third place at the event with a score of 70.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee Middle hosts seven-school meet
The Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track and field team hosted a seven-school meet on the afternoon of Monday, March 28 at the Cherokee High School track.
