Several renovations ahead at New Kituwah Academy
New Kituwah Academy (NKA), the early childhood to sixth grade Cherokee language immersion school located in the old Boundary Tree Lodge, is readying for several renovations in 2025.
Bill to place Tennessee lands into trust for EBCI introduced again
For the fifth Congress in a row, a bill that would place 76 acres of land, containing several Cherokee historic sites in eastern Tennessee, in trust for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives.
Cherokee Preservation Foundation supports Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts
The Cherokee Preservation Foundation (CPF) is proud to announce grants for ongoing disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In response to the devastating impact of the storm, CPF has awarded funding to three organizations dedicated to providing critical assistance to affected communities across Western North Carolina.

Oconaluftee Indian Village prepares to open for 2024 season
The Oconaluftee Indian Village will open on Tuesday, April 16, for their 2024 season, which will last until Nov. 2.
EBCI members present on mask making at Western Carolina University
On the evening of Thursday, April 11, two Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) members, Davy Arch and Driver Blythe, gave a presentation on the history of Cherokee mask making at the Mountain Heritage Center at Tali Tsisgwayahi (Two Sparrows Place) on the campus of Western Carolina University (WCU).

I remember a song I often sang in church as a kid. It was, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. Does anyone remember that one? It seems so long ago. I believe that was a different time and attitude of the church and Christian devotion.
COMMENTARY: Revelations from Selu
In 2001, Jenean Hornbuckle, an Eastern Band of Cherokee artist, and I were hired to produce a statue of Selu. Selu was the Cherokee mother of corn. My first step into the project was to read the Selu story.

Aria Foerst, a senior at Cherokee High School, will continue her volleyball career next year at Ferrum College. She signed a letter of intent during an event at the Charles George Memorial Arena on the morning of Monday, March 14.
Youth wrestling tournament to be held at Harrah’s Cherokee
This journey takes its next step in Cherokee with the YONA Youth Wrestling Championship. This wrestling event is planned for March 5 and 6 and will be the first of its kind held at the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Convention Center.

Mike Daniel Walkingstick, age 67, passed away on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024 at Maggie Valley Nursing Home after an extended illness.
