UKB suspends housing program
The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma (UKB) suspended its housing program Jan. 7. The Tribe cited direct and indirect circumstances with funding, including an incomplete audit and federal government shutdown. During the suspension the tribe won’t be providing housing services, nor will it accept applications for housing programs.
Two native women make history taking oath in Congress
For a first in the United States, two Native American women were sworn into the House of Representatives Thursday. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) and Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) took the oaths of office as newly-elected representatives. Haaland is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna, and Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation.
