Bingo could be coming back to Cherokee
Cherokee Tribal Bingo closed in 2020 due to COVID-19, and it never re-opened. Now, officials of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) are looking to start the operation again.

The smell of bean bread wafted through the air as the sounds of children laughing, Cherokee songs being sung, and men and boys playing stickball could be heard. It was all at Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee.
Groundbreaking held for new HIP Community in Tsisqwohi
A total of 24 one-bedroom homes are being planned for a new HIP Community in Tsisqwohi (Birdtown). Tribal leaders broke ground on the project on the afternoon of Friday, May 31.

COMMENTARY: What will it take?
The purpose stated in the Charter for the census is to ensure that the tribal communities (six) have equitable representation on Tribal Council. The census is supposed to determine the respective voting weight of each Tribal Council seat.

WRESTLING: Smoky Mountain Conference championship held
The 2023 Smoky Mountain Conference wrestling championship was held at Robbinsville High School on Saturday, Jan. 11. Robbinsville took the team championship with 260.5 points followed by Swain Co. with 168.
RUNNING: Amaya Hicks signs to run at Western Carolina University
Amaya Hicks, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), will continue her running career at the next level at Western Carolina University (WCU). The six-time NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) state champion signed a letter of intent during a ceremony held at Swain Co. High School on the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 19.
