Renovations have been completed at Cherokee Post Office
The Cherokee Post Office has been expanded and gotten a facelift in a few other parts. Those renovations have been ongoing for the past few months and were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the rainy morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Big Cove Ponds dredging plans happening soon
The three ponds on Big Cove Road that sit adjacent to KOA campground, which are owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and managed by EBCI Fisheries & Wildlife Management, were drained mid-summer to prepare for dredging due to low water levels and high water temperatures.
Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (Sept. 2)
The One Feather will now provide weekly legislative updates on various pieces of federal legislation of interest to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The bills are shown in the order in which they were introduced following the new bills for the week.

Women’s History Month: Maker of War
Lambert encourages women of all ages and skill levels to participate and gears the workout toward their specific needs—whether that be to match their skill level or nurse certain injuries. Lambert hopes that the women who attend her class leave feeling empowered and strong.
Sneed’s art shown in exhibit at Hickory Museum of Art
Lenoir-Rhyne University students participated in an exhibit at the Hickory Museum of Art recently entitled “The Art of Profession” which featured students in the Advanced Studio Practices, and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) was one of those featured. Tishara Sneed, an EBCI tribal member who also has Dine’ (Navajo) heritage, displayed three ceramic masks for the exhibit.
Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority receives North Carolina Award for Excellence – Advanced Level
The Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) was honored with the North Carolina Award for Excellence – Advanced Level from North Carolina State University’s Industry Expansion Solutions during a special presentation on Friday, Jan. 31, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

At last year’s Kituwah Celebration, the gentle sounds of a flute could be heard wisping through the air at the ancient Mother Town of the Cherokee. The beautiful sounds were being performed by Matthew (Matt) Tooni, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), who always brings beautiful music and a passion for Cherokee language and culture wherever he goes.
EDITORIAL: “Strengthen Our Tribal Communities Act” is unfair to the EBCI
If a new North Carolina state house bill passes, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) would be sharing a portion of its gaming revenues with various state-recognized groups and organizations including the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The basic premise is ludicrous, but read on.

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee teams come out on top as they host four-school meet
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team hosted a four-school meet on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 29, and both the CHS Braves and Lady Braves teams took first place.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK: Cherokee hosts five-school meet
The Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track and field team hosted a five-school meet on the afternoon of Monday, March 27.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in WNC Kickoff Invitational
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team participated in the WNC Kickoff Invitational at the Western Carolina University track in Cullowhee on the afternoon of Friday, March 24.

Allen “Leonard” Tolley, born on Oct. 6, 1942, to the late William “Dink” and Olive Maney “Ollie” Tolley, of Cherokee, walked into his eternal reward, April 1, 2025, He was a dedicated individual and a proud veteran of the US Army.
