Cards distributed at NCAI rebut Lumbee history and recognition efforts
Cards bearing the logo of the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma (UINO) were distributed during a General Assembly meeting at the 81st Annual National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Convention and Marketplace on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and caused a stir within the organization.
Parents accuse Swain County Schools employee of racial discrimination
On Sept. 13, Leslie Frankiewicz filed a grievance against Swain Co. football Head Coach Sherman Holt for racial discrimination against his child, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and a former student at Swain County High School.

EBCI WIC Program receives Breastfeeding Award of Excellence
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) WIC program has been honored with the prestigious Breastfeeding Award of Excellence Gold status, making it the only agency in the Southeast Region to receive this recognition.
Encouraging language and reading: Chi Shipman bringing more Cherokee language to Library
Chi Shipman is dedicated to both learning the Cherokee language and sharing it with others. She recently accepted the position as manager of the Qualla Boundary Public Library and hopes to be able to add Cherokee language in inventive ways there.

COMMENTARY: We all need accountability
Being responsible for someone or something is never an easy chore. Ask any parent. If you truly take on the duty to raise a young one right, it will be a physically and mentally taxing endeavor. On top of meeting personal goals and meeting spiritual standards, a parent must also navigate societal norms.

Swain Co. Hall of Fame inducts Spencer McCoy
Spencer McCoy, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) was inducted into the Swain Co. Hall of Fame on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Swain Arts Center. McCoy was a tri-sport athlete of wrestling, football, and track.
SWIMMING: Tribal member honored for outstanding career
Rebecca Wolfe Damas won accolades for swimming at the high school, collegiate, and national levels, and now she has been honored by her local school district. Damas, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, was inducted recently into the Clear Creek Independent School District (League City, Texas) Athletic Hall of Honor.
FOOTBALL: Robbinsville 46 Cherokee 6
The Cherokee Braves (4-2) hosted the Robbinsville Black Knights (5-1) in a Smoky Mountain Conference match-up at Ray Kinsland Stadium on the evening of Friday, Sept. 29. The final score was Black Knights 46 Braves 6.

Marie Taylor Swayney, 88, of Whittier, N.C., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024.

Carly Dea Maples, 47, of the Birdtown Community, passed away peacefully with family by her side Monday, Nov. 18, 2024. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of Linda Maples of Cherokee, and George O. Burgess of Franklin, N.C.

“Many Faces” mask exhibit opens at Museum of the Cherokee Indian
A new exhibit at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, called “Many Faces”, features the ancient art of Cherokee mask making in a modern realm and will inform visitors of this art form still practiced by some artists of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).
