New Cherokee Royalty crowned for 2023-24
The new Little Miss, Junior Miss, Teen Miss and Miss Cherokee were crowned at the 111th Annual Cherokee Indian Fair in the long-awaited return of pageants at the Fair.
Museum changing name, branding, and moving forward
The Museum of the Cherokee Indian has changed its name and branding and is looking to further expand its mission of educating people. Announced officially on Tuesday, Oct. 3 during the Cherokee Indian Fair Parade, the new name of the facility will be the Museum of the Cherokee People – but, there’s more to it than that.
Veterans honored at 111th Cherokee Indian Fair
Veterans of all branches of the United States Armed Forces were honored during activities at the 111th Cherokee Indian Fair in Cherokee, N.C. on Friday, Oct. 6. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Veterans Honor Day event began with a Veteran’s Walk followed by a luncheon and an honoring program.

The innovative artistry and work of the late Shan Goshorn will be featured in an upcoming exhibit at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla.

Remember the Remained riders to tour area Cherokee sites
The 2020 Remember the Removal riders were disappointed when the event, which retraces the northern route of the Trail of Tears from Georgia to Oklahoma, was cancelled last month due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

SPEAKING OF FAITH: Thirsty? Come and drink…
“Thirsty? Anyone who is thirsty may come to Me!” Jesus shouted to the crowds on the last day of the Feast. “Anyone who believes in Me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart,’” (John 7:37-38) (NLT).

Let me first say welcome to all our veterans from every branch of service, and a heartfelt welcome to your families, and friends and all those who have come from near and far to honor veterans on this day.
COMMENTARY: Longer terms are not enough
Four-year terms for our elected officials are the best solutions for the long-term health of our Tribe (please see last week’s commentary), but it should be done in conjunction with two other missing tenants in our law.

Members of the Cherokee High School track teams competed in a polar bear indoor track meet at Polk County on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The Cherokee Lady Braves defeated the Highlands Lady Highlanders 83-23 at the Charles George Memorial Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Walter Lewis Farmer, age 93, of Whittier, passed away unexpectedly at Mission Hospital on Friday, May 20, 2022.

Dewey Cochran, 77, of the Towstring Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 21, 2022 at his residence. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Harley and Fannie Burr Cochran.
