EBCI Family Safety Program celebrates fifth anniversary
On Oct. 1, 2015, the Family Safety Program became the child welfare and adult protective services program of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). The Family Safety Program took over jurisdiction from North Carolina Department of Social Services for any child welfare or adult protective matter arising on tribal trust land.

COMMENTARY: What should we do with the elk?
During EBCI Community Services program reports last week, Natural Resource Enforcement (NRE) reported that out of 908 total calls for the previous reporting period (typically a month), 123 calls were requesting help with elk. That is roughly 13.5 percent of all call activity for that period being elk related.
COMMENTARY: Curing what ails us
Our heritage, benefits, and personal identity have long been wrapped up in a system that identifies us as enrolled members of a body of people. In an ironic twist of fate, we are identified as Cherokee due to our connection to a federal roll established in 1924.

OBITUARY: Rebecca “Becky” Bigwitch
Rebecca “Becky” Bigwitch, 66, of Cherokee, passed away following an extended illness on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022 in her home in the Wolftown Community of Cherokee. Becky was loved and was preceded by her late father, Leroy Reed, and late mother, Winona (Watty) Reed.
