CCS School Board holds May meeting
The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS) met on Monday, May 5 in the Central Office Board Room. The meeting was called to order at 4:46 p.m. by Chairperson Jennifer Thompson.
EBCI Public Health achieves National Public Health Accreditation
The EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Public Health Department has announced it has achieved National Public Health Accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB).
Bill introduced to recognize Michigan state-recognized group
A bill has been introduced into the 119th Congress of the United States that would grant federal acknowledgment to a state-recognized group in Michigan. H.R. 3255 (Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians Restoration Act of 2025) was introduced by Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.) and Congressman John James (R-Mich.) on Thursday, May 8.

Order of the Long Leaf Pine awarded posthumously to Lambert Wilson
On Friday, March 10, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was presented posthumously in honor of Lambert Wilson to his longtime partner, Jenny Holland. This award is North Carolina’s highest civilian award, given to those who have made notable contributions to their community.

A very good and productive discussion was held at the November Planning Board meeting. There hadn’t been a meeting since August and the relatively new representatives along with the Principal Chief were identifying the purpose and function of the Planning Board in addition to discussing outstanding land use issues currently in question.

BASKETBALL: Cherokee players named to All-Conference teams
The Big Smoky Mountain All-Conference teams have been released, and the Cherokee Braves and Lady Braves are represented on both.
SOFTBALL: Maroon Devils defeat Cherokee 15-1
The Cherokee Lady Braves (0-1) lost their season opener, in a home game, against the Swain Co. Lady Maroon Devils by a score of 15-1 on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 13.

Wilburn James Wiggins, 67, of the Galbreath Creek Community, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, N.C. after a courageous battle with cancer.
