Cherokee begins sales of adult-use (21+) cannabis for all
Ben Cordell, of Greenville, S.C., got in line at the Great Smoky Cannabis Co. at 1 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024 to be the first in line as the business was opening later that morning for adult-use (21+) sales to all for the first time. The line of more than 1,000 people snaked through the parking lot.

Bevier Hasbrouck Sleight III, 78, who was employed as Santa at Santa’s Land Fun Park & Zoo in Cherokee, was arrested by Cherokee Indian Police Department on Aug. 29 for 13 child abuse charges:

Joey Parker Memorial Playground dedicated
The exuberant spirit of the late Joseph “Joey” Parker was celebrated at an event at Cherokee Central Schools on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 24. Led by his sisters, Myra Cloer and Kym Parker, the family raised over $45,000 to construct the Joey Parker Memorial Playground behind the Cherokee Elementary School.

EDITORIAL: Kituwah should be designated a World Heritage Site
Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, located just outside of Cherokee, N.C. near Bryson City, N.C, is an ancient, sacred site. This site should be deemed a World Heritage Site – making it the 26th property in the United States with such a designation.
COMMENTARY: Take care of our home
We get bent out of shape over land. I mean downright hateful. And you would too if the history of your people was that once someone else found value of any kind, precious minerals found on the property, rich soil and flat ground, or some other valuable use could be found for the land, it was stripped away from the people. This actually happened.
