2024-25 EBCI Royalty crowned at 112th Annual Cherokee Indian Fair
During the 112th Annual Cherokee Indian Fair, the Little Miss Cherokee and Junior Miss Cherokee pageants were held on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Teen Miss Cherokee and Miss Cherokee pageants were held on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 3, and for the first time in 20 years, the Senior Miss Cherokee pageant was held on the afternoon of Oct. 3.
U.S. Attorney’s Office observes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina joins the Justice Department and the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), as well as law enforcement agencies, community organizations, victim service providers, advocates, victims, and survivors in observing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).
Tropical Storm Helene hits Qualla Boundary
Tropical Storm Helene hit western North Carolina hard bringing large amounts of rain which caused flooding throughout the region on Friday, Sept. 27. The Qualla Boundary (Cherokee, N.C.) was among the areas affected and saw flooding in various places including the Oconaluftee Island Park in downtown Cherokee which was completely underwater by mid-morning on Friday.

The Birdtown Gym has been re-named for a person synonymous with basketball in the Cherokee community. The building will now be known as the Peaches Squirrell Sports and Recreation Complex.

BASKETBALL: Lady Braves ready for a new season
The Lady Braves varsity basketball season begins on Friday, Nov. 22 at Asheville Christian Academy. They will start their season away from home for their first two games, with the second coming at Robbinsville on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
SOFTBALL: Eagleman signs with Erskine College
Swain County High School’s Kenzie Eagleman has signed on to continue her softball career at Erskine College.
CROSS COUNTRY: Esquivel places 10th at state, named All-State
Jaylynne Esquivel, a freshman member of the Cherokee Lady Braves varsity cross country team, placed 10th at the 1A State Cross Country Championship

OBITUARY: Linda Faye Jumper
Linda Faye Jumper, 61, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
OBITUARY: Lorretta Jean Jobe
Lorretta Jean Jobe, 73, went to sleep in Jesus on Oct. 27, 2023, following a year of declining health. She belonged to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
OBITUARY: Edwin (Randy) Faus
Edwin (Randy) Faus, 77, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023 at his residence. A native of Greenville, S.C., he was the son of Christine Foster Reid of Greenville, S.C. and the late Thomas Reid.

Asheville Art Museum receives grant to archive contemporary Cherokee art
The Asheville Art Museum has received a grant to continue collecting and archiving contemporary Cherokee art. The Museum currently has 25 works from Cherokee artisans including baskets, carvings and ceramics.
