Cherokee Police Commission holds July meeting
The Cherokee Police Commission met in the Ginger Lynn Welch large conference room on the afternoon of Thursday, July 17. The meeting was called to order at noon by Chairperson Anita Lossiah.
Voter participation around 32 percent for EBCI Primary
Around 32 percent of the registered voters of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians turned out to cast a ballot in the Primary Election on Thursday, July 17. According to information from the EBCI Board of Elections, 1,370 of the 4,285 registered voters cast a ballot for a voter participation of 31.97 percent.

Modern Cherokee moccasins included in exhibit at Ulster Museum in Ireland
Ulster Museum, located in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has recently refreshed “Inclusive Global Histories”, an exhibition which was launched in March 2022 demonstrating National Museums NI’s continuing commitment to decolonisation, diversity and inclusion. The exhibit will be on display until March 2025.

Lucina Lira is a youth development professional for the Cherokee Youth Center, an afterschool and summer youth program. Lira, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), attended the Youth Center as a child, and she now enjoys providing a fun and educational space for new generations.

COMMENTARY: Approving adult-use cannabis is common sense
Cannabis has been debated by the tribal government of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) for going on a decade now. EBCI voters voted overwhelmingly for a referendum in September 2023 approving adult-use (sometimes referred to as recreational) of cannabis.
COMMENTARY: Those who can, do.
I have watched as some have commented on “investigative reporting” and why we don’t do more of it. They imply that either there is a lack of interest in providing that type of reporting or that somehow there is a pressure or lean toward upholding or towing the “company line” when it comes to issues involving tribal officials and their actions. Neither opinion is accurate.
COMMENTARY: The Bridge to Nowhere
In February 2022, then-Cherokee One Feather reporter Jonah Lossiah wrote an article titled, “The Bridge over the River, Why?”, using a play on words from a 1950s novel and movie titled “The Bridge over the River Kwai”.
