BGN vote on Kuwohi name restoration could be coming soon
An application to restore the name of Clingman’s Dome, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to its original Cherokee name, Kuwohi (mulberry place), was sent to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) in February. Officials say a vote could be coming soon.
Climbingbear pleads not guilty to three charges, five dismissed
Travis Climbingbear, 44, pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him at his arraignment in Cherokee Tribal Court on Monday, July 15. Charges were filed May 13, and Climbingbear was arrested May 17 and placed under a $2,000 bond.
Cherokee Indian Hospital to hold Job Fair to address staffing shortage
The Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) is currently short-staffed and is planning a Job Fair to address this issue. The event, which will feature on-the-spot interviews, will be held in the Welch Top Conference Room in the hospital on Monday, July 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

EBCI tribal members chosen for Indigenous Leadership Academy
Two members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) have been selected to participate in the Indigenous Leadership Academy through the Arizona State University (ASU) American Indian Policy Institute. Devyn Smith and Tevis Blankenship were chosen for the Spring 2023 cohort program.
