Groundbreaking held for new additions to Big Cove Fire Station
Ground was broken on new additions to the Big Cove Fire Station in Kolanvyi (Big Cove) on the morning of Thursday, July 24. Tribal officials of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) joined staff from Cherokee Fire & Rescue for the event.
EBCI Government Explained: Absentee voting
Registered voters of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) may cast an absentee ballot for tribal elections providing they meet certain criteria and deadlines. Absentee voting is covered in Cherokee Code Sec. 161-15.

Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launches Hinigoliya
Qualla Boundary Public Library and Snowbird Community Library launched a new reading program, Hinigoliya (you and I read), on Tuesday, March 5. Hinigoliya is a reading initiative to promote early literacy for children in kindergarten to third grade within the five-county service area (Graham, Cherokee, Swain, Jackson, Haywood).
Speakers’ Consortium holds quarterly meeting in Cherokee
The quarterly Cherokee Speakers’ Consortium meeting between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), the Cherokee Nation, and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) was held from Feb. 13-16 in Cherokee.
“sov*er*eign*ty” exhibit to open at Museum of the Cherokee People
The Museum of the Cherokee People is examining many sides of the issue of tribal sovereignty in a new exhibit, entitled “sov*er*eign*ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)”. It will open to the public on Friday, March 15, 2024 and is scheduled to run through the end of February 2025.

Sequoyah National Golf Club bunker and re-grassing project completed
The bunker renovation and re-grassing project that began in March at the Sequoyah National Golf Club are now completed.
NCHSAA: There will be sports, just an amended schedule
Despite COVID-19, high school student-athletes will be able to participate in sports this year, but it will be under a much different schedule than usual.

Mildred Alyne Walker Dixon, 87, of Whittier, N.C., went home to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 9, 2024. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late William McKinley Walker and Amanda Catt Walker.
OBITUARY: Nancy Lois Lambert
Nancy Lois Lambert, better known as Lois, age 79, went to be with the Lord on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024 after an extended illness.
