The U.S. Department of Justice reports that 1 out of every 3 American Indian women will be raped in their lifetime and 75 percent will be physically assaulted. Rashica Manjoo, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, visited Cherokee on Friday, Jan. 28 to gather information on the problem in Indian Country.

At the December 2010 regular board meeting, the Board of Directors of One Dozen Who Care, Inc., (ODWC), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) Community Development Corporation in Andrews, hired Lisa Jones, an EBCI tribal member of Robbinsville, as the new Executive Director. She began her duties on January 18.

NCAI President Jefferson Keel delivered the State of Indian Nations address in Washington, DC on Thursday, Jan. 27.

Cherokee veterans were given a special recognition on Thursday, Jan. 27 as some were presented with Quilts of Valor by the members of the Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild.
