The Cherokee Lady Braves (12-2) and the Braves (6-8) both had big wins at home over Murphy on Friday, Jan. 10.

Lady Braves 79 Murphy 46
This game started out close with Cherokee leading 20-18 after the first period, but the second period was a completely different game and story as the Lady Braves really put the pressure on defensively. They outscored the Lady Bulldogs 26-7 to take a 46-25 lead into the locker room. It was all Cherokee in the second half as they breezed for the big 79-46 win.
Cherokee’s Blake Wachacha (#15) plays hard defense in the second half of Friday’s game against Murphy.
Kendall Toineeta and Avery Mintz led the team with 19pts each followed by Le Le Lossiah with 14. Mintz also added 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Other Lady Braves scorers included: Bree Stamper 3, Miranda Smith 2, Blake Wachacha 4, Brionna Jumper 3, Peri Wildcatt 9 and Taran Swimmer 6.
Murphy scorers included: Mich King 2, Isabelle Davis 1, McKena Jones 3, Sarah Nicely 7, Haley Chastain 4, Emma Stroup 4, Hannah Carson 8, Hannah Setser 8 and Kendra Henry 9.

Braves 86 Murphy 62
The Braves also had a relatively close start to this game as they led 24-15 after the first period. Like the girl’s game, the Braves had a huge second period outscoring the Bulldogs 30-9 to take a 30pt lead into the locker room.

They kept the pressure on during the second half outscoring Murphy 26-14 in the third period to take the big win.
Dustin Johnson led Cherokee with 17pts followed by Chris Queen with 10. Other Braves scorers included: Jason McMillan 8, Jayce Girty 4, Brandt Sutton 6, Simon Montelongo 2, Keenan Panther 4, Darius Thompson 6, Jesse Toineeta 8, Derrick Ledford 6, Hunter Lambert 2, Silas Reed-Littlejohn 4 and Eli Littlejohn 9.
Stats were not available for the Murphy boys.

Hayesville sweeps Cherokee
Cherokee traveled to Hayesville for a make-up game on Saturday, Jan. 11 and came away with two losses. The Lady Braves lost by 11 (57-46) and the Braves lost by 8 (75-67).

Meghan McQuade scored 32pts to lead the undefeated Lady Yellow Jackets in their win. She is leading all of western North Carolina with 23.2pts/game.
Hayesville led 18-5 after the first period and took a 27-18 lead into the locker room. The second half was relatively close with the Lady Yellow Jackets edging Cherokee 14-12 in the third period and both tying up at 16 each in the fourth.
Kendall Toineeta led Cherokee with 21 points followed by Brionna Jumper with 10. Other Lady Braves scorers included: Bree Stamper 1, Avery Mintz 8 and Peri Wildcatt 6.
Other Murphy scorers included: Courtney McNabb 6, Hannah Long 2, Amanda Thompson 14 and Rachel Benson 3.
Hayesville 75 Braves 67
Hayesville took an early nine point lead after the first period (25-16), but the Braves came back and only trailed 41-36 at the half. Hayesville outscored Cherokee by three in the second half to take the 8pt win.
Dustin Johnson led Cherokee with 25pts followed by Jason McMillan with 9. Other Braves scorers included: Brandt Sutton 6, Kennan Panther 2, Darius Thompson 8, Jesse Toineeta 8, Silas Reed-Littlejohn 2 and Eli Littlejohn 2.
Hayesville scorers included: Isaac Mills 13, Acosta 1, Rhinehardt 7, Long 2, Cox 8, Ryan 2, Grant Arencibia 17 and Zach Cottrell 25.
