CIPD asking for community help on two fatalities

The Cherokee Indian Police Department issued two requests for help from the community on Wednesday, Oct. 18 involving two fatalities in Cherokee – one in September and another in August.

John Michael Arkansas (aka “Dobbs”), 57, was found lying on the roadway on Old No. 4 Road near the Cherokee Water and Sewer Treatment Plant on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 6 at around 2:57pm.  He later succumbed to his injuries and passed away while at Mission Hospital.

Melvin Esmal Herndon, 86, of Eutaw, Ala., was found deceased by CIPD officers at the intersection of Hwy 19 and Jess Littlejohn Road on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 3 at around 7:20am.  After the initial investigation, it was concluded that Herndon succumbed to injuries sustained from an apparent hit-and-run.  After speaking with witnesses, CIPD officials believe the incident occurred early in the morning of Aug. 3 between 12:45-1am.
