The 1st annual Charles George Memorial Corn Hole Tournament, held on Saturday, Aug. 22, was a wonderful success.  This fundraising event was the first of many future events that is totally dedicated to making the two bronze statues of PFC Charles George a reality.  The American Legion Steve Youngdeer Post 143 extends a huge thank you all the participants who made this tournament happen.  Without your kindness, concern, and competitive spirit, this event would not have come together in the manner that it did.  A special thank you to both Patty and Justin Buchanan, family members of Charles George.

We wish to thank the Cherokee Indian Fair Grounds staff, Indian Corn Throwdown, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Skip Myers, and especially US Navy Veteran Gene “Tunney” Crowe.  All of these individuals made very generous donations to the memorial fund.  The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians community working together will bring this memorial fund project to completion in the months ahead, and our children will have a greater understanding of the heroic sacrifice that PFC Charles George made that resulted in him being presented the Medal of Honor posthumously.

Respectfully,

Warren Dupree
