On May 28, Cris Weatherford of the Cherokee Children’s Home, attended the opening evening of the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) Annual Conference held at the Omni Grove Park Inn.  The LSAC is the governing body for all law schools in the United States.  They monitor admissions of students in law school across the country as well as administer the LSAT standardized test for all students seeking to enter law school.  They also know how to get together and have a great time.

Five Hundred faculty and staff from law schools from across the country and Canada convened for the evening which consisted of a speech from Mark Woods, Superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway and fundraising activities for the Cherokee Children’s Home.  A silent auction was held and beaded jewelry made by the staff and children of the Children’s Home as well as Grove Park Inn stay packages were purchased.  There was also a singing contest in which the audience voted by making monetary donations.

Vivian Bowden was responsible for locating a charity for the group to support during their meeting and did a wonderful job organizing the affair.  Dan Bernstine, President of the LSAC, was so impressed with the philanthropic spirit of the evening that he decided that the organization would match the funds raised during the evening.  The silent auctions and donations brought in around $5,000 and with the council’s match brought the total to $10,000.

The Children’s Home would like to thank the LSAC especially Vivian and Dan for their work and their support.  All the money raised is going towards the construction of the new Cherokee Children’s Home, which is currently under construction.  It was truly an exciting and fun evening with everyone!

The Boys Club Board of Directors election was held on Thursday, Aug. 28.  The following people were elected:  Albert Arch, Jack Davis, Beth Bradley Grant, Robert Lambert and Tiffani Reed.  Jason McMillan was elected as the Student Representative from Cherokee High School at an election held at the school on Aug. 26.

In accordance with the Club’s Bylaws and Election Rules, an organizational meeting of the new board was held on Tuesday, Sept. 2.  At this meeting the five newly elected board members selected Cory Blankenship and Carmaleta Monteith as outside business members.  The board then elected officers for the 2014-2016 term.  Cory Blankenship was elected to be President; Albert Arch was elected Vice President; Tiffani Reed was elected to be Secretary; and Beth Bradley Grant was elected to serve as Assistant Secretary.

The newly elected board’s first task was to vote on a recommendation from the General Manager Replacement Committee to hire a General Manager to replace Tommy Lambert who will be retiring as of Sept. 30.  The Replacement Committee, consisting of Scott Penland, Carmaleta Monteith, Stephanie Treadway, Wilbur Paul and Perry Shell, screened applications for the position and conducted interviews of all qualified candidates.  The Committee recommended David (Skooter) McCoy, Jr. for the General Manager’s position.  After careful consideration and discussion, the board accepted the Committee’s recommendation.

The new Board Members and the new General Manager will be sworn in on Wednesday, Oct. 1.  The Board will serve a two-year term beginning Oct. 1, 2014 through Sept. 30, 2016.  The General Manager is appointed every four years.

The Club extends its sincere sympathy to the friends and family of Rose Welch who passed away on Sept. 5.  She was the grandmother of Trista Welch, manager of the Club’s Printing department.  Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
