SCC to hold two graduation ceremonies on May 8

SYLVA –  More than 300 Southwestern Community College students will receive their associate degrees, diplomas and/or certificates in a pair of commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 8, in Myers Auditorium at the Jackson Campus.

The 5 p.m. ceremony, which is for health science graduates, will feature speaker Mary Chauvin – a graduate of the Nursing program. She is graduating magna cum laude (Grade Point Average between 3.7 and 3.89).

Michael Bruce, a Haywood County resident who is earning his college transfer diploma and a certificate in Web Technologies-Web Design, will be the featured speaker at the 7:30 p.m. ceremony for career technologies, arts and sciences and Early College graduates. Bruce is graduating summa cum laude (GPA between 3.90 to 4.0)

“We are very proud of all our graduates,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “These students who’ll speak at their respective ceremonies exemplify what Southwestern is all about. They’ve worked hard, and they’re passionate about making a difference in their community.”
