George Vernon Sneed Sr., 72, of the Painttown Community, passed away on May 1, 2014 at Mission Hospital. George is the son of the late Vernon George Sneed and Sally Otter Jackson. George retired after 33 years as a telephone repairman and was involved in community organizations which include, 20 years as the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Chief, either years as a member of the Cherokee School Board, and he was a member of the Tribal Utilities Commission and the NC Rescue EMS Association of Rescue. Along with his parents, George is preceded in death by two brothers, John Robert Sneed and Butch Jackson; and one sister, Mary West.
George is survived by his wife, Kitty Sneed; children, Sonny, Leonard, Shane, Josie, Arlene, Buck and Sammi, all of Cherokee; one brother, Richard Sneed; aunts, Priscilla Cooper and Virginia Dickson; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A visitation was held on Saturday, May 3 at Rocksprings Baptist Church. The funeral service was held on Sunday, May 4 at Rocksprings Baptist Church and burial followed at the Cam Sneed Cemetery with the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Dept. serving as Pall Bearers. Pastor Greg Morgan and Pastor Richie Sneed officiated.
