CULLOWHEE – A one-day “Introduction to Cherokee Language” class will be offered Friday, Oct. 19, by Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing Education.
The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in WCU’s Cordelia Camp Building. The cost is $59, with lunch included.
Thomas Belt and Hartwell Francis from WCU’s Cherokee language program will begin the class by introducing the Cherokee syllabary. Students will then move on to holding brief conversations in Cherokee. Sound files on CD, a syllabary chart and reference sheets will be provided for review and further study.
“Understanding verb stems is key to learning the Cherokee language,” Francis said. “We will help participants learn this important element and also give them access to an extensive Cherokee language website where we post our work. This will allow them to continue their study after the course concludes.”
