USET elects new leaders during annual meeting
During the recent United South and Eastern Tribes Sovereignty Protection Fund (USET SPF) annual meeting, hosted by the Seneca Nations of Indians in New York, the organization held officer elections.
ICWA decision brings push back from Tribe
The federal district court decision of Brackeen v. Zinke, which ruled that the Indian Child Welfare Act was unconstitutional, has prompted a response from Principal Chief Richard G. Sneed. He introduced and got passed a Tribal Council resolution to aggressively pursue means to defend the sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and all federally-recognized tribes.
Two fatalities in head-on collision
On Thursday, Oct. 18 at approximately 1:02pm, Cherokee Indian Police Department Officers were dispatched to a head-on collision in the area of US 19 and Macedonia Road.

New WCU chancellor to meet with communities
Western Carolina University Chancellor David O. Belcher will meet members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Swain County community in November as part of a “get acquainted tour” that will take WCU’s new chief executive officer to 15 stops during a four-month span.
