EBCI Government Explained: Exclusion (banishment) powers
The Cherokee Code of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians gives tribal leaders the authority to exclude individuals, including EBCI tribal members, from its lands. This process is sometimes referred to as banishment but is referred to as exclusion in the Code.
Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (June 2025)
Every few weeks, the One Feather will provide legislative updates on various pieces of federal legislation of interest to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The bills are shown in the order in which they were introduced.
Remember the Removal Riders begin their journey
The 2025 Remember the Removal (RTR) riders received a send-off from Kituwah, the Mother Town of the Cherokee, on the evening of Friday, May 30. Riders will embark on the journey from New Echota, Ga., former capital of the Cherokee Nation, on Monday, June 2 and will arrive in Tahlequah, Okla. on Saturday, June 21.

Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority Pharmacy earns two prestigious Indian Health Service Awards
The Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) has announced that its Pharmacy Department has been honored with two prestigious Indian Health Service (IHS) Director’s Awards, recognizing the outstanding achievements of both the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy Teams.
EBCI WIC Program receives Breastfeeding Award of Excellence
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) WIC program has been honored with the prestigious Breastfeeding Award of Excellence Gold status, making it the only agency in the Southeast Region to receive this recognition.
Encouraging language and reading: Chi Shipman bringing more Cherokee language to Library
Chi Shipman is dedicated to both learning the Cherokee language and sharing it with others. She recently accepted the position as manager of the Qualla Boundary Public Library and hopes to be able to add Cherokee language in inventive ways there.

CROSS COUNTRY: CHS, CMS runners rack up awards at Conference Meet
Runners took to the course at Kituwah on the beautiful fall morning of Saturday, Oct. 15 for the Smoky Mountain Conference (SMC) Championship meet, and Cherokee High School (CHS) and Cherokee Middle School (CMS) brought home a lot of hardware.
