The One Feather posed the following questions to the candidates for Cherokee School Board.
EBCI Government Explained: Land surveys
Land surveying is covered in the law of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) in Cherokee Code Chapter 102. Sec. 102-1(a) states the intent, “To protect the health, safety, and welfare of the members of the Tribe, this chapter is written with the intent of improving the accuracy and consistency of land surveying and mapping activities, and land records, addressing the territory of the Tribe.”
Federal legislative updates of interest to EBCI citizens (Aug. 26)
The One Feather will now provide weekly legislative updates on various pieces of federal legislation of interest to members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The bills are shown in the order in which they were introduced following the new bills for the week.

Visitors walking into the Museum of the Cherokee People these days will see much work being accomplished on the lobby area and beyond. Museum staff is currently working diligently to update the main exhibit which is scheduled to re-open in March.

SPEAKING OF FAITH: I miss church
I know the arguments and understand the desire to attract those ‘in the world’ to attend church with entertainment. But have we become so much like the world that it is hard to tell the difference? Have we lost our salt? Is our light like every other street light shining without brightness?
COMMENTARY: Sovereignty between a rock and a hard place
Over my years with the tribe, I have been a witness to a lot of chest-thumping over Indian sovereignty. From top tribal leadership to the lowest common denominator, we take pride in our perceived freedom.

The ever-present smile and positive attitude of Hugh Lambert is endearing to all who meet him. He is quick with a joke and a funny story but also very focused on serving his people and community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in four-school meet at Hayesville
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team participated in a four-school meet at Hayesville High School on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 15. Following are results, per nc.milesplit.com, showing the top three finishers in each event and all CHS finishers:
MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK: Cherokee Middle competes at Andrews
The Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track team competed in the Andrews Middle School Widlcat Meet at the Andrews High School Track on the afternoon of Monday, March 13.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee hosts season-opening meet
Cherokee High School hosted seven other schools for its season-opening meet on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 8.

OBITUARY: Johnny Wayne Browning
Johnny Wayne Browning, 68, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 16, 2025, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He was born Oct. 1, 1956, to the late John and Bida Silver Browning.
OBITUARY: Timothy Isaiah McKinnell
Timothy Isaiah McKinnell, 18, of the Painttown Community in Cherokee, N.C., joined Heaven’s Orchestra on Monday, March 10, 2025. Timothy was born June 16, 2006, to Kansas “Kandee” Parker of Cherokee, N.C. and Robert McKinnell.
OBITUARY: Reuben Edward Taylor
Reuben Edward Taylor, 99, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord and loving wife, Mary Jane, Wednesday, March 12, 2025. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Timpson and Cinda Reed Taylor.
