Dinilawigi approves budget amendments, requests to apply for grant funding
During its regular session on Thursday, Sept. 4, Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) approved several budget amendments and requests from programs of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) to apply for grant funding. Items No. 15-20, all submitted by Brandi Claxton, interim secretary of treasury, were approved unanimously as part of the consent agenda.
Dinilawigi tables, withdraws several pieces of legislation during September session
Dinilawigi (Tribal Council) tabled several ordinances during the Orders of the Day portion of its regular session on Thursday, Sept. 4 including one designed to solve an upcoming vacancy on the Cherokee School Board. Several of these were tabled for more discussion before being brought to the floor for a vote.
Renovations have been completed at Cherokee Post Office
The Cherokee Post Office has been expanded and gotten a facelift in a few other parts. Those renovations have been ongoing for the past few months and were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the rainy morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Poteete to be guest speaker at Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation Gala
The Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation has announced that Troy Wayne Poteete, Executive Director of the National Trail of Tears Association, will be the distinguished guest speaker for the 14th Annual Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation Gala on June 21.
EBCI Community Clubs win WNC Honors
Several Community Clubs of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians won in categories at the recent WNC Honors Awards, a program of WNC Communities. The Wolftown Community Club won the Impact Award.
Women’s History Month: Maker of War

THE GOOD STUFF: Matthew Tooni is passionate about sharing music and language
At last year’s Kituwah Celebration, the gentle sounds of a flute could be heard wisping through the air at the ancient Mother Town of the Cherokee. The beautiful sounds were being performed by Matthew (Matt) Tooni, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), who always brings beautiful music and a passion for Cherokee language and culture wherever he goes.

TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee teams come out on top as they host four-school meet
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team hosted a four-school meet on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 29, and both the CHS Braves and Lady Braves teams took first place.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK: Cherokee hosts five-school meet
The Cherokee Middle School (CMS) track and field team hosted a five-school meet on the afternoon of Monday, March 27.
TRACK & FIELD: Cherokee participates in WNC Kickoff Invitational
The Cherokee High School (CHS) track and field team participated in the WNC Kickoff Invitational at the Western Carolina University track in Cullowhee on the afternoon of Friday, March 24.

OBITUARY: Jack “Ray” Blankenship
Jack “Ray” Blankenship, 86, of Cherokee went home Thursday, April 3, 2025. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Roy and Georgia Goforth Blankenship.

Allen “Leonard” Tolley, born on Oct. 6, 1942, to the late William “Dink” and Olive Maney “Ollie” Tolley, of Cherokee, walked into his eternal reward, April 1, 2025, He was a dedicated individual and a proud veteran of the US Army.
