Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar named five prominent American Indians to a national commission on Thursday, Dec. 1 that will undertake a forward-looking, comprehensive evaluation of Interior’s trust management of nearly $4 billion in Native American trust funds.

The Department of Interior is proposing changes to its 50-year-old regulations regarding approval of leases on Indian lands. The Department says the old regulations are “antiquated” and a “one-size fits all” approach.
