Lavita Hill and Mary Crowe, both members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), submitted a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) on Tuesday, Feb. 6 on behalf of EBCI Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Tribal Council to officially request the name change of Clingman’s Dome, located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and restore it to the original name Kuwohi.

A facility to house historical collections of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is moving forward.  Currently in the early planning stages, the Off-Site Collections Facility (a working name only) will be built at the Kituwah site. 

The School Board of Cherokee Central Schools met on Monday, Feb. 5, in the Central Office Board Room of Cherokee Central Schools (CCS).

In December 2023, Kituwah, LLC officially launched their advertising company, AllTribe Advertising which is a Cherokee-based all-inclusive advertising agency with a leadership team comprised of Chris McCoy, Matt Levin, and Luke Swimmer.

Mobile sports betting will go live in North Carolina on March 11, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) plans to be a part of that market.

The Kituwah Economic Development Board (KEDB) has formally selected Samuel Owl, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) from the Wolftown community, as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Kituwah, LLC after a comprehensive search to fill the position. Owl will be succeeding Mark Hubble, who has served as chief executive officer since the entity was formed in 2018.

In recognition of January as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, representatives from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, Office of the Tribal Prosecutor, Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority S.A.F.E. (Sexual Assault and Forensic Examiners) Nurse Program, Office of the Principal Chief, and the Cherokee One Feather, met Jan. 25 in the Large Conference Room of the Ginger Lynn Welch Building to discuss community-centered intervention and prevention for the issue of human trafficking on the Qualla Boundary.

The Supreme Court of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Tribal Court vacated the conviction of Benjamin Cody Long on Dec. 14, 2023.
