The route for this year’s 106th Annual Cherokee Indian Fair Parade on Tuesday, Oct. 2 will be different than in the past few years. 

Two Cherokee youth represented the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians well at two recent 4-H Presentation Competitions.  Kaelin Jones and Lucian Davis both placed in the 11-13 age group at the District Competition held in June at Madison High School as well as the State Competition held July 21 at N.C. State University in Raleigh.     

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Higher Education & Training office recently partnered with Mars Hill University to offer EBCI Summer Youth College Experience (SYCE) participants a weeklong college immersion experience. 

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has appointed Casey Cooper, chief executive officer of Cherokee Indian Hospital, to fill an unexpired term on the Board of Trustees at Western Carolina University.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP) and Southwestern Community College (SCC) in Sylva are partnering to increase the number of students transferring to and graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill. SCC will be the 11th community college to partner with C-STEP and Carolina.

My life changes every day in many ways. These days, I realize I need to slow down, take a break and smell the roses, or in my case, “deck time!”

Over 2,400 native youth gathered at the 42nd United National Indian Tribal Youth Conference in San Diego, where Miss Cherokee 2017-18 Faith Long was inducted into the third class of its “25 Under 25 Native Youth Leaders” national recognition program that honors Native American and Alaska Native youth.
