Did you know that common insects and other small animals in a creek can provide an indication of the pollution status of the creek, itself? Help the environment, and contribute two to three hours in the spring and fall. You will work with a small friendly team that wades in a creek and collects aquatic bugs.
The Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River (WATR) will hold a one-day training on Saturday, March 29, from 9am to about 3pm, at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Cherokee, located behind the Baptist Church and the Econo Lodge on Old River Road. Check the website listed below for directions.
Participants will learn how to report water quality problems, identify aquatic insects, and collect field samples. For those oriented to environmental education, it is an opportunity to build your resume and earn credits. Anyone age 17 and up and all levels of experience are welcome. For ages 14 to 16, call ahead to the WATR office to discuss participation.
Data collected on the Qualla Boundary will be given to the tribal Office of Environment and Natural Resources. The training is part of the Stream Monitoring Information Exchange (SMIE).
